Hospitals: 911 for Emergency

The Harlan County Health System:

In 1951 the Alma Memorial Hospital opened in a two-story house donated by the Haskell family. When a new hospital was constructed in 1969, the hospital moved, and at the same time, the Alma Medical Clinic moved from its downtown Alma location to a new building adjacent to the hospital. The Clinic became part of Harlan County Health System in 1989, and was sold to Family Medical Specialties of Holdrege in 1999.

Today, the Harlan County Hospital is a 25-bed facility, Medicare certified providing short-term acute medical-surgical, along with a full range of outpatient services. In addition to acute care, the hospital enrolls in the Swing Bed program, and provides Skilled Care as well as Intermediate Care nursing service. Home Health and Hospice services are also available. A Lifeline system is monitored at the hospital's nursing station, and responder units are available. In 1997 it was named a Rural Primary Care Hospital, and then as a Critical Access Hospital in 1998. It has been managed by Great Plains Health Alliance of Phillipsburg, Kansas since 1951.

The hospital has a full-service laboratory and X-ray department. CT scan, ultrasound, mammography, EKG, Holter monitoring and vascular diagnostics are available. Specialists see patients at the Harlan County Hospital in cardiology, urology and surgery, orthopedics, podiatry, ophthalmology and general surgery. Physical, occupational and speech therapists are at the hospital almost every day.

Harlan County Health System has a Fujinon EVE400 video processor; light source; high-resolution monitor; and a colonoscopy, gastro scope, and laparoscope for less invasive procedures. We also have Interactive Television, making it possible for the doctors and patients to consult with another physician in a metropolitan hospital. It is one of the few rural hospitals in Nebraska to have this capability.
